AB InBev goes for homebrewing

After the mega-deal, which saw AB InBev swallowing its rival SABMiller, it looks like the world largest brewer is now having a closer look at adjacent smaller business opportunities. This week it became known that ZX Ventures, the venture capital arm of AB InBev, has acquired Northern Brewer and its sister company Midwest Supplies, which together form one of the largest home brew supply goups in the U.S.. The company sells via mail order a wide range of products, which are needed by individuals for making their own beer, wine, cider, coffee and cheese.

Northern Brewer was founded 23 years ago by Chris Farley as a home brew supply shop in St Paul, MN. The company has since expanded and included retail locations in Minneapolis and Milwaukee, where it offers events and classes. In 2013, Northern Brewer acquired its largest rival, Midwest Supplies, in neighboring Minnepolis, MN.

According to a statement of the founder, “nothing will fundamentally change as the result of this deal”. The entire leadership team will remain intact and the company will continue to act independently.
