USA: Lyft offers beer to encourage ride sharing service

Lyft, the country’s second biggest ride sharing company after Uber, has teamed up with Baderbräu Brewing Company from Chicago, Illinois, to produce and sell Baderbräu’s Five Star Lager under Lyft's brand in select Chicago bars. For now the brew is only available in 12-ounce cans, which give its customers a 60% discount for as much as $5 off on their next ride home.

The offer is meant “to encourage more Chicagoans to travel responsibly when they’re out on the town," David Katcher, Lyft's midwest general manager, said in a statement. The San Francisco based company, which offers on-demand app-based taxi rides, hopes that the beer will function as something of a “palate-cleansing nightcap,” a final beer that customers will order before ordering a taxi service to go home or head to their next destination. “We know through data that nightlife is one of our largest business segments, especially going out on a Friday or Saturday night,” says Katcher.

If the trial, which starts at a Jan. 18 party at Baderbrau and which will then expand to around 30 or 40 Chicago bars goes well, Lyft plans other local Lyft beer partnerships in all kinds of major cities.

In the past Lyft already collaborated with Anheuser Busch to provide thousands of free rides home during weekends and holidays in select cities.
