Netherlands: Homebrew device Minibrew raises €2.45 million

Dutch start-up Minibrew has raised another €2.45 million to establish its newly developed home brewing system in the market. The money adds to the €1.4 million the company already received from its founders and investors and €346,000 it received in a preselling period through crowdfounding platform Indiegogo. The company states it has already more than 400 customers from 33 countries, including some well-known national and international breweries.

MiniBrew was founded in September 2015 by Olivier van Oord and Bart van de Kooij. The all-in-one homebrew system is a very compact solution and does not need additional equipment for cooling, fermenting or storing. All the needed ingredients come in a box and have to be filled into the machine. The recipe and the brewing process can be controlled through an app on the smartphone. After 3.5 hours of brewing, adding of yeast and another week of fermentation, 5 liters of fresh beer are ready to tap right from the fermentation tank. The beer drinker can choose from a wide variety of recipes, which are already available.

The money will be used to expand in North America, South America, and Asia, and to continue developing the product. “But we are also seeing promising traction in Japan, Australia and Brazil. We will expand gradually into these markets as well”, says Bart van de Kooij, who is also expert in the product development. And he adds: “An interesting and quite open customer segment is people that have never brewed before and would not brew in the old fashion time consuming home brewing way.  Another promising customer segment is professional brewers that are using Minibrew for rapid prototyping new beer recipes.”

Edwin Blom, who held before senior positions in sales and marketing with Grolsch and FrieslandCampina, is not only one of the new investors in the second financing round but has also taken over the position as CEO of Minibrew from co-founder Olivier van Oord. He wants to establish MiniBrew successfully in the market and wants to use his deep knowledge of the industry to lift the product to the next level.
