Germany: VLB opens new € 35 million brewing and beverage training and education center

After an eight-year planning and construction period, the Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei in Berlin (VLB) opened its new institute building in Berlin. Around 500 guests from the German and international brewing industry took part at the opening ceremony in October.

As one of the world’s leading competence centers for the brewing, malting, and beverage industry, VLB Berlin took a major step in its 139-year history. New laboratories, seminar rooms, and offices as well as modern pilot plants for malting and beverage technology are now available for further education and for research and development for the brewing and beverage industry.

With its new training center, VLB plans to expand the range of services it offers.: “Our goal is to continue to educate highly trained graduates for the German and international brewing and beverage industry as well as the associated supply industry, ” said VLB’s Managing Director Dr. Josef Fontaine.

Upon VLB’s move to the new facility, most of the old buildings at the former site were transferred to the TU Berlin and Charité Hospital. Both organizations have already begun with the planning the expansion and conversion of the site. The common goal is to create a high-class research and training campus for the fields of biotechnology, food technology, and medicine in the central Berlin location on Seestrasse 13.

“We proudly present our new VLB today,” said VLB President Ulrich Rust in his speech at the opening ceremony. “In spite of various difficulties that such a complex building project entails, we have succeeded with the help of numerous supporters. Our special thanks go out to the Berlin Senate Department, who supported the entire budget of about € 35 million out of state and federal funds significantly.”
